Argan oil is plant oil derived from the kernels of the argan tree, Argan spinosa, that grows in Morocco. In Morocco, it is used for different culinary purposes, such as dipping for bread, salad dressing, or adding an extra flavour to couscous or pasta. The active ingredient of argan oil gained its recognition and popularity in the cosmetics market in the early 2000s. Currently, argan oil is added into formulations of face creams, masks, moisturizers, lip products, and soaps.
The active ingredient of argan oil is extremely beneficial to dry and dull skin. However, it is also good for reducing acne because it is non-comedogenic and will not leave greasy effects after application due to its lightweight. The key skin benefits of argan oil are its richness in antioxidants and fatty acids as well as its anti-inflammatory and moisturizing properties.
Argan oil is rich in antioxidants including vitamin E and polyphenols that protect the skin from environmental damage. For instance, vitamin E facilitates skin softening and anti-ageing. Moreover, antioxidants protect the skin from free radicals. Free radicals are responsible for cell damage; however, the power of antioxidants inhibits their formation which in return helps to slow down the formation of premature wrinkles and fine lines.
Besides the high contents of antioxidants, the active ingredient of argan oil consists of 95% of fatty acids. They provide moisturizing and nourishing benefits to the skin.
Fatty acids like linoleic and oleic acids are considered anti-inflammatory. In addition to being non-comedogenic and leaving skin non-greasy, they can also help to soothe the irritated parts of the skin.
The active ingredient of argan oil provides healing and sealing properties that appear extremely beneficial to the skin’s outer layer. Besides improving the visual appearance, it prevents skin from further damage and drying. It prevents transepidermal water loss by protecting and restoring the skin’s outermost barrier.
The active ingredient of argan oil extract does not have major side effects and is safe to use on daily basis. It is recommended to use it as a final step in the morning and/or nighttime skincare routine as a final step to seal in moisture. It is non-irritating and is suitable for all skin types.
