Soybean oil is a vegetable oil derived from the seeds of the soybean, Glycine max. It is widely used in the food industry, particularly for frying and baking purposes. In the skincare industry, soybean oil also became a widely used ingredient that works well with other emollient and humectant ingredients. It is typically added into formulations of different moisturizers and hydrating face masks.
Soybean oil contains an unsaturated fatty acid, linoleic acid (7-10%), that helps to strengthen the skin’s moisture barrier by delivering essential fatty acids. These fatty acids reduce water loss, promote skin hydration, and prevent irritants. It is believed that when soybean oil is applied topically, it penetrates its top layers and provides occlusion. Moreover, it has the ability to mimic the natural lipids that are ideal for protecting and repairing skin’s moisture barrier.
Soybean oil is also rich in vitamin E, lecithin, and genistein which play the role of antioxidants. These antioxidants work together to protect the skin cells from toxins and pollutants as well as facilitate self-repair. Vitamin E also has anti-inflammatory properties that help to soothe skin, reduce irritation, and calm the complexion.
The active ingredient of soybean oil does not have major side effects and is safe to use on daily basis. It is great for dry and sensitive skin; however, it is not recommended for oily skin as it can clog pores and trigger acne.
