Papain, also known as papaya proteinase, I, is a protein-degrading enzyme found in papaya (Carica papaya) and mountain papaya (Vasconcellea cundinamarcensis). It is extracted from different parts of papaya including the leaf and bark. Papain is used in a wide range of different commercial applications, such as cosmetics, detergents, textiles, pharmacies, and foods.
In skincare products, papain is used as an exfoliating ingredient that helps to remove dead and damaged skin cells.
Papain has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties which can help to prevent future breakouts and reduce acne. For this reason, it is added to different exfoliants and cleansers as this ingredient effectively removes pore-clogging dead skin cells and reduces acne. Alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) content of papain helps to diminish blemishes and pigmentation which can occur after breakouts.
Papain also contains essential antioxidants like vitamin C and lycopene that reduce signs of ageing. Because papain is mainly an exfoliator, it removes dead skin and flake patches leaving the skin bright, glowing, and healthy-looking.
The active ingredient of papain does not have major side effects and is safe to use daily for most skin types. Individuals who are allergic to latex and/or papaya should avoid using skincare products that contain papain.
