
Sorbitol was first identified in 1872 in the berries of the mountain ash tree, Sorbus aucuparia, by a French chemist. It is naturally present in various fruits, including pears, apples, prunes, and peaches. Today, sorbitol is also commonly produced synthetically by reducing glucose, a process that converts the aldehyde group into a hydroxyl group. For this reason, sorbitol is classified as a sugar alcohol.
In skincare formulations, sorbitol is primarily used as a hydrating and moisturizing ingredient. Its water-attracting properties help visibly hydrate the skin while also improving the texture and stability of cosmetic products, allowing it to function as a mild thickening agent. Overall, sorbitol supports skin hydration, enhances formulation performance, and contributes to maintaining a healthy skin microbiome.
As a humectant, sorbitol draws water into the skin, helping to maintain optimal moisture levels. Sorbitol also plays a valuable role as a thickening agent in skincare formulations. Thickeners are essential in product development because they improve spreadability and ensure even application across the skin’s surface, enhancing the overall user experience.
