Acetyl Tetrapeptide-5, also known under the trade name Eyeseryl®, is a highly effective, naturally derived tetrapeptide celebrated for its ability to diminish the appearance of puffiness and dark circles under the eyes while preventing their recurrence.
The development of puffy eyes is often attributed to the accumulation of fluid, referred to as eyelid edema. This fluid buildup can be the result of several factors, with poor lymphatic circulation and increased capillary permeability being among the primary causes.
Glycation involves a non-enzymatic reaction between glucose or another monosaccharide and proteins, where the aldehyde group of the sugar reacts with amino groups on the proteins to form a Schiff’s base, leading to the creation of fructosamine or Amadori adducts. As these compounds undergo further reactions, including oxidation and crosslinking, they contribute to the formation of eye bags, with collagen cross-linking being a significant factor.
Eyeseryl® was tested for its efficacy in inhibiting glycation, particularly noting its impact on enzymes like Cu, Zn-Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) which can undergo glycation in vivo. This enzyme is crucial for converting superoxide radicals into hydrogen peroxide and oxygen. The interaction of SOD with sugars leads to glycation and enzyme inactivation. Eyeseryl®’s role as a glycation inhibitor was evaluated through its effect on preventing SOD inactivation by fructose, serving as a model for studying glycation processes. The findings indicated an enhancement in SOD activity, signifying that Eyeseryl® effectively inhibits its glycation.
Eyeseryl® combats edema by targeting mechanisms such as vascular leakage and reinforces the structural integrity of the area under the eyes by preventing protein glycation. Furthermore, Acetyl Tetrapeptide-5 boosts skin elasticity, smoothness, and offers a decongesting effect, contributing to a more youthful and refreshed appearance.
