Phytic acid, also known as phytate, is a natural antioxidant derived from linseeds, sunflower seeds, and sesame seeds. It is classified as a milder Alpha-Hydroxy Acid (AHA) which is known for its exfoliating and skin rejuvenation properties.
AHAs help to improve skin’s texture and reduce signs of aging by facilitating shedding of cells on the epidermis payer and restore hydration. The mechanism of action requires further studying. However, one proposed hypothesis suggests that AHAs have an ability to decrease the concentration of calcium ion in the epidermis, and then via chelation, remove these ions from cell adhesions. As a result, desquamation occurs.
The active ingredient of phytic acid is used in skincare products for its ability to fight free radicals and boost hydration. Free radicals trigger premature aging and formation of wrinkles. They are created due to sun damage, pollution, and smog, which damages epidermis and weakens collagen’s properties.
Skincare products with the active ingredient of phytic acid are recommended for individuals who have melasma or acne.
Phytic acid is considered to be a slow release agent, which enables sequential and progressive actuation of its acid properties. Thus, it is unaggressive.
