Milk Thistle Extract has the scientific name of Silybum marianum and is an upright herb that has a conical shape and can grow from 30 to 200 cm (12 to 79 in) in height. It is native to the Mediterranean regions especially Crete. However, it is also common in North America.
The active ingredient of Milk Thistle Extract is used in skincare products due to its anti-aging and anti-inflammatory properties.
The Milk Thistle Extract consists of 20% of fatty acids, including linoleic acid, and 80% of silymarin. Silymarin and its most active compound, silybin, are antioxidants that protect the skin from cell damage. Together they inhibit toxins from entering the cell or making these toxins leave the body before they would cause damage. Moreover, they block enzymes that result in collagen’s destruction.
The anti-oxidant property protects the skin from free radicals and other pollutants that accelerate premature aging. If the active ingredient of Milk Thistle Extract is applied topically, it protects the skin from damages caused by UVA and UVB. Besides premature aging, UVA and UVN can also result in oxidative stress which can cause skin cancer in the future.
Milk Thistle Extract reduces skin aging due to antiglycation. Glycation is a so-called aging reaction that occurs between protein and sugars found in the skin. The connection between sugar and protein makes skin supple; however, these connections begin to break down at the age of 30 and increase with age.
The anti-inflammatory properties reduce rosacea as well as regular redness and itching.
The active ingredient of Milk Thistle Extract does not have major side effects and is safe to use on daily basis.
