Kaolin clay, also known as white clay or China clay, is a one of the soft clays that can be produced in both natural and synthetic settings.
In skincare products it is used as a dying agent. Moreover, it also adds absorbency and texture into different formulations. Most commonly, it is found in different cleansers, masks, and serums.
The main functions of kaolin clay is to absorb oil and smoothen the skin. Due to its gentle texture, it is also used as an exfoliant.
The active ingredient of kaolin clay is able to bind sebum. It absorbs excess sebum and moisture produced in oily skin.
Kaolin clay can also control oils and shine. It mattifies skin’s complexion by removing any excess oil found on skin’s surface.
It is recommended to incorporate kaolin clay into acne therapy regime because its active ingredient absorbs excess oils, removes impurities, such as dead skin cells, dirt, and residue left behind from using cosmetic products, from deep skin layers, and decreases appearance of pores.
Kaolin itself is rich in essential and trace minerals. These minerals remove various secretions, oils, and containments in the skin if applied topically. They are perceived as cleansing and refreshing agents that absorb impurities and moisture as well as reduce unwanted blemishes. It is important to note that kaolin does not rob skin of its natural moisture.
The active ingredient of kaolin clay does not have major side effects and is safe to use on daily basis.
However, it is not recommended to use for individuals with dry skin. This is because kaolin clay can cause excessive dryness of the skin and result in irritation.
