Guaiazulene, also known as azulon, is a dark blue crystalline hydrocarbon derived from azulene. It is naturally found in different plant species like Chamomile, mushrooms, the Blue Tansey flower, palo santo, and even some soft corals. Moreover, guaiazulene serves as a constituent of some essentials oils, mainly chamomile oil and oil of guaiac.
For years, the active ingredient of guaiazulene has been used as a natural colorant. However, recent skincare formulations started incorporating it for its anti-inflammation and anti-acne properties.
By definition, inflammation is a body’s natural immune response to different stressors. It causes swelling and redness, especially in the areas affected by acne and blocked pores. The active ingredient of guaiazulene helps to prevent inflammation, reduce redness, and even skin tone.
It is believed that the daily incorporation of skincare products with guaiazulene also prevents premature aging because inflammation is associated with accelerated skin aging.
The active ingredient of guaiazulene does not have major side effects and is safe to use on daily basis.
