Squalane is a colorless hydrocarbon and a hydrogenated derivative of squalene. In the past, the unsaturated form of squalene has been extracted from sharks’ livers- to produce one ton of squalene, about 3000 animals were needed. However, due to its controversial production and environmental concerns, plant-based options like rice, sugar cane, and olive oil became popular alternative sources.
Human bodies also have a unique ability to produce squalene in their bodies. It helps us to retain moisture and create collagen. The levels of squalene decrease with age. For this reason, its plant-based derivative, squalane, has been created to mimic squalene’s functions of retaining moisture and hydration within our bodies. In other words, squalane is squalene’s natural supplement.
The active ingredient of squalane is added to moisturizers, creams, and cleansers for its emollient and moisturizing properties. It effectively hydrates the skin by locking moisture within the skin and not allowing any water out. The water retention actions help to visibly reduce anti-aging signs by making the skin’s texture smoother and brighter. The skin looks more plump and radiant.
Squalane also regulates oil production. Since it mimics the actions of squalene that we naturally produce, it would help to control the amounts of sebum the body has.
The active ingredient of squalane is suitable for all skin types and is safe to use on a daily basis.
